Hey and welcome to Pokestorm's Photoshop Vortex Tutorial. Here I will teach you how to make an awesome vortex in Photoshop! First here's a list of the thing you need.
Photoshop!
Computer
A brain! (Duh)
For my tutorial I'll be using Photoshop CS3. I'm pretty sure it will work with any Photoshop though. Well lets get this party started!!! xD
Step 1:
Open up your Photoshop and create a new file. You can make it whatever size you want in pixels, but in this tutorial I'll be using 250x250. Make sure your file has a white background. It should look like this image below, but with the size adjusted.
Step 2:
Now set your foreground color to black and your background color to white. Now you must go to Filter-->Render-->Clouds.
You will end up with something like this.
Step 3:
Once you get that done go to Filter-->Pixelate-->Mezzotint.
Once you click it you should be at the screen below. Make sure you put it at Fine Dots and then click ok.
You end up with something similar to the image below.
Step 4: Making the Vortex
After you have completed the above steps, you must now go to Filter-->Blur-->Radial Blur.
Click on Radial Blur then the screen below should pop up. Make sure you put the amount at 100, the blur method at zoom and the quality at best. Then click ok.
You should end up with a black and white Vortex. Like the one below.
Step 5: Adding Color
Well congratulations on making your vortex...but it looks boring!! This is the part where you add the amazing color! There's a variety of ways you can add the color, but for the best results you should use a gradient. Pick to colors you want to use in your gradient and then select the type of gradient you want to use to fill in your vortex. Make sure you set the mode of the gradient to either Soft light or Hard light. It doesn't really matter which one, it depends on how you want your vortex to look. Now just drag the mouse from the center of the vortex to edge and your vortex should now have color! Here's mine using the diamond gradient.
Feel free to experiment with other gradients as well as with other foreground and background colors. Here's a vortex with the same colors using the linear gradient.
